Lisbon’s history is engraved in its buildings, a dense tale of architectural testimonies from every age. This tour takes you through three eras in search of three different Lisbons.
1 – The dreamed city: the opportunity created by the devastating 1755 earthquake could not be missed. The Marquis of Pombal and a team of military engineers revived the plans for a long-awaited renovation and created a landmark in world architecture, with a lean, earthquake-resistant design for Lisbon’s Downtown.
2 – The modern city: in the 1940s, the dictatorship imposed the national image and its architectural style. The city’s expansion to the north, middle-class housing, new markets, the airport and countless public works set the stage for a golden age of Portuguese architecture.
3 – The city of the future? Can anyone guess how long this urban approach will survive architecture’s ever-changing trends? In the Parque das Nações area we will see how the former Expo 98 site became a fresh urban district, and discuss the secret of its success.
