The incredible Sado estuary and the Tróia peninsula have been inhabited since Phoenician and Roman times. The estuary is still home to dolphins and many wading birds, and upriver the age-old tradition of salt extraction now sits alongside rice growing.

In the morning we stroll through the historic centre of Setúbal, ending at the market, reputed to have the best fish around Lisbon. Then we take the ferry across to Tróia – if you are lucky, dolphins may come to greet you. In Tróia we visit one of the most important Roman sites in Portugal.

We take a look at what may be one of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in Portugal, where you may not resist a swim. After lunch, we visit a unique stilt-built fishing pier in the estuary and, on the way back, pass through Alcácer do Sal, one of Portugal’s most charming whitewashed towns.

Tips

  • There is no fresh fish at the market on Mondays
  • In summer you can swim at the beach
